OK, so last year I shot this video for the local band Marcato. I like the guys and I actually like their music so it was cool to work with them, unfortunately nothing ever came of this. I don't know what happened, but Kevin never got back to me and I never heard from him again on changes or what not. This version is slightly different than the one that I originally shot and edited. During our first discussions Kevin and the band agreed that they wanted Nazi imagery used in the video, so during the bridge I used some old footage, I have actually changed that a bit here. I put b-roll footage of the band playing over that footage to soften it. I thought it was too harsh then and I still do now so you know. So watch the video if you will and tell me what you think.

Pretty cool in parts, but I'm not a fan of the from-the-back-of-the-club shots, with the exception of those synchronized jumps the band does, and then even those don't fall in sync with the right moments in the song for them. Also I would have used really quick, short bits of the nazi footage, spliced in and out and under the performance footage, rather than just putting it all in one chunk in the middle. But then I know fuck-all about video-makin'.
Hey Chuck thanks for the feedback. This was my first shot doing a music video and there are some things I would do differently if I was to do it over. First off I probably would have done your suggestion as well with the Nazi footage. I used it during the bridge originally for the impact and after watching it a few times it definitely had an impact, one I wasn't sure I could support for a long amount of time. As far as the timing goes, I learned a lot from this shoot and I learned why when bands shoot a live video the only shoot one song over and over. I shot their whole set at The Reverb and then cut the footage together. If I did it again I would have it as a more controlled shoot where I was truly in charge of everything. I would actually do it during the day when the Reverb was closed and only have Marcato fans there and have them do the song probably about 5 times and then sync and pick the shots to use. Like I said I learned a damn lot on this shoot. I want to do more videos, I would also like to attempt concept videos as well. We will see where this road takes me.
I can honestly say that I couldn't tell that the footage was from different songs -- the thought never occurred to me. So you worked well with the limitations at hand.
I guess there were parts where it kind of looked like the singer wasn't singing the words that were going on in the songs, but I thought that might have been purposely mismatched for effect -- you get that weird disconnect feel like you get from movies where the dialogue is dubbed on or the audio is off-sync. Or maybe I just got that due to the fact that I had just watched Stalker a couple days earlier. Ooh!! some scratchy old-film effects would have played that up neatly. I'm just full of ideas today.
Another thing I see in videos is that sometimes people purposely don't try to match all the performance footage up with the song but instead give it the feel of a sort of highlight reel of one or more live gigs. I imagine it must be hard to convey that though, you would have to use just-off-enough timing to convey that the footage isn't *supposed* to sync up with the song.
The back-of-the-club shots still lose a lot of intensity for my tastes though, you mostly just see people standing around, and the guy guy carrying his beer moseying into the shot at the start of the bridge is, well, potentially kind of comical, depending on how you want to look at it. ;)
I'd still probably call you to make a video for my band before anyone else I know. But then I'd probably take up way too much of your time with discussions like this :D
The moment you want me to shoot a video for you Chuck I'll be on it like whie on rice. It would be an honor to work with you no matter how long it took.
